Obituary for Anna Beatrice McGaha Smith
Anna Beatrice McGaha Smith, 102, of Barnwell, South Carolina, widow of Irvin William Smith, passed away at home on August 25, 2014 surrounded by her family. Mrs. Smith was born on August 14, 1912 in Cosby County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late William Russell McGaha and Ellen Jenkins McGaha. Mrs. Smith grew up in Sevierville, Tennessee and graduated from the Sevierville Public Schools. Mrs. Smith was a charter member of Hagood Avenue Baptist Church in Barnwell, where she remained a devoted, loyal and compassionate congregate for over sixty years. She was a charter lifetime member of the Easter Star Harmony Hope Chapter #229, serving as both Worthy Matron and District Deputy. She belonged to the Iris Garden Club of Barnwell, a local supper club, and the Ladies of the Auxiliary. Mrs. Smith was known baking her famous pound cakes, sourdough bread and apple pies, which she made and gave freely for the sheer joy of doing so. Survivors include daughter Joan Smith Girardeau (Sheldon) of Walterboro, South Carolina, son William Irvin Smith, Jr., of Columbia, South Carolina, grandchildren Victoria Girardeau Culpepper (Eric) of Walterboro, South Carolina, Edward Hamlin Girardeau of Lake Charles, Louisiana and Sheldon Moseley Girardeau, Jr., of Walterboro, South Carolina, nine great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded by her sisters Trula Tarpley, Millie Baxter, Mattie Sparks, Rhoda Shultz, Geneva Payne and Gladys McGaha, her brothers Dr. Y.J. McGaha, William R. McGaha, Jr., and Milford McGaha and her beloved great-grand daughter Rebecca Brooke Girardeau. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, August 28, 2014 in the Hagood Ave. Baptist Church with Dr. Kenneth Catoe officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell Co. Memorial Cemetery at the airport. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Wednesday at Mole Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Smith's name to the Hagood Ave. Baptist Church, 1144 Hagood Ave., Barnwell SC 29812. A special thanks to Roberta Hammonds, her caregiver and devoted friend and to Halycon Hospice for all their care and love shown to our mother.
