Arden Black Grubbs, 97, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 27, 2025, while at Pruitt Health in Barnwell.
Arden was born on November 24, 1927 at the family's beloved homeplace in Barnwell, SC to the late John Calvin Riley Grubbs and the late Ethel Lillian Still Grubbs. He was the nineth of eleven children having shared life and death with each one and was the last to be reunited in heaven which in his last weeks, he longingly called "home." He was a faithful servant to his family and loved them with tremendous affection and gratitude.
He married the girl who captured his heart with a smile, the late Mary Ann Hiers Grubbs on April 17, 1955. They were married for 55 years and had one son, the late Philip Calvin Grubbs. They were active, lifetime members of First Baptist Church, Barnwell.
He served in the United States Army in the Korean War from 1950-1952. After returning home from serving his country, he became employed with the United States Post Office. In the early years, he delivered the mail by riding his bicycle up to twelve miles per day. Eventually, he became the assistant to the Post Master and retired after 27 years of loyal service from the occupation he loved.
In retirement, Arden loved working in his yard. He deeply enjoyed time at "the old home place" where he gardened and tended to the pond and the pine trees. Always delightful and with a smile, he greeted everyone and happily joined in stories of yesteryear, especially any that involved his family, his friends, his Gamecocks, and his Barnwell.
Survivors include his grandson, Orry Grubbs (Cortney) and great-granddaughter, Cora, as well as many neices, nephews, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 161 Allen Street, Barnwell, SC, with funeral services to follow at 3:00 p.m., with Dr. T. Bart Kelley officiating. A graveside service will follow at the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery at the airport.
