Obituary for Arthur Wayne Fortanbary
Barnwell SC A.Wayne Fortanbary, 77, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather died Monday, October 14, 2013, at Providence Hospital in Columbia SC. Born October 8, 1936, in Gaffney, SC, he was the proud son of the late Arthur Richard Fortanbary and Ethel Long Fortanbary. He graduated from Limestone College with a degree in mathematics. In 1959, he began a long and illustrious career with Milliken until his retirement in 1998. He served in the South Carolina National Guard for 30 years, including service in Ecuador. He was also a servant of the Lord through his medical mission work in Honduras. He was an active member of the Ellenton Ag. Club for many years, enjoying the company and fellowship of his friends. He also was a former member of the SWC Jaycees, and past president of the Board of Sweetwater Country Club. In retirement, Wayne was the owner and operator of Barnwell Golf Cart Service located on hwy.64. His love of machines brought him joy through repairing and building golf carts for his many friends. His kind heart, generous nature and warm smile brightened all of our lives. So with tearful eyes we say goodbye, but with happy hearts we cherish his memory. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Fortanbary, and his three sisters, Jean Gordon, Mary Smith and Helen Mullis. He is survived by his wife and life-long bride of over fifty years, Connie Jean Davis Fortanbary. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother Richard Fortanbary(Mary) of Mooresville, NC, sister in law Jean Fortanbary of Gaffney, SC and his four sons, Michael Wayne Fortanbary (Ramona) of Leesburg VA, David Jackson Fortanbary (Kitty) of Marietta, GA, Charles Edward Fortanbary of Charlotte, NC and John Lloyd Fortanbary (Leslee) of Columbia SC. He has seven grandchildren, Will Fortanbary, Alex Fortanbary, Lauren McGowan (Ryan), Andrew Fortanbary, Ashley Fortanbary, David Morrison, and Jackson Fortanbary, great granddaughter Jordan Bowes and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 17th from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Mole Funeral Home in Barnwell SC. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, October 18th at the Barnwell Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery at the airport.
