Obituary for Berry Patrick "Pat" Black
Berry Patrick “Pat” Black of Hilda passed away Thursday, October 11, 2018 at his home. Pat was born on October 21, 1931 in Bamberg County. He was the son of the late Lloyd and Faucia Still Black.
Pat was retired from the Savannah River Plant and Westinghouse. He was a Veteran of the US Army serving in the Korean Conflict.
For years, Pat loved to farm and grew a variety of crops and raised cattle on the family farm. Throughout his life he enjoyed woodworking making toys for his grandchildren, small furniture pieces and a cradle for his youngest grandson.
At Double Pond Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and a committed member of the House and Grounds committee. Pat also sang in the choir and was a faithful member of the men’s Sunday School class.
Together with his wife, Janice, they enjoyed traveling to many places in and outside of the United States. He especially loved traveling to see his grandchildren as they grew up!
Pat was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in his early 50’s. He managed this disease for 35 years with dignity and grace.
Pat is survived by his wife, Janice, of 60 years. She lovingly and selflessly cared for him for many years. Also, surviving are his daughters, Melanie (Philip) Wessinger of Greenville, South Carolina, Kim (Don) Taylor of Midland, Michigan: a sister, Arie Black Guess of Blackville; grandchildren, Zachary (Nicole) Taylor, Matthew Wessinger, Kyle ( Justine) Taylor, Meredith Wessinger, Michael ( Meredith) Taylor, David Taylor; a great-grandson, Zander Taylor; a brother- in -law, Jack ( Judy) Grubbs; sister -in- laws, Thelma Black and Sheila Black; and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by a sister, Sarah Black Guess and brothers, Herman Black and Tommy Black. The family is grateful to the many nurses and caregivers who cared for Pat, and also to Agape Hospice and DayBreak Adult Care Services for working tirelessly with the family to extend care to him.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am. Monday, October 15th at Double Pond Baptist Church, Blackville, SC with Dr. Thomas Terry officiating. Burial to follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Double Pond Baptist Church, 357 Double Pond, Blackville, SC 29817. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell is assisting the family with arrangements.
