Obituary for Betty (B.J.) Funderburk
Betty (B.J.) Funderburk, 77, left us on May 3, 2015, to be with Jesus. Born in Barnwell, SC she was the daughter of the late Boyce and Ossie Bell Creech. Retired after thirty years from the former WBAW Radio Station; B.J. founded the Funderburk-LaFavor Animal Shelter and ran it for seven years. She also was an EMT with the Barnwell Rescue Squad for 15 years. She was a life-time member of Barnwell First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Nancy Creech/Georgia Fields Sunday School Class; the Nursing Home Ministry Group; the Thelma Smoak Missions; the Bereavement Ministry; the Hospitality Ministry and worked many years in the kitchen at the Activity Center for Wednesday Night suppers. She also enjoyed playing the piano, gardening and watching her birds. But her biggest joy in addition to spending time with her four girls, grandchildren and great granddaughter, was protecting and caring for the animals. In fact in her words, "God put me on this Earth to care for the animals." B.J. is survived by her four daughters, Lindy (Scott) Hearne of Fort Collins, CO; Susie (Marty) Grubbs of Barnwell; Patti Funderburk (Brian Cook) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Beth (Winston) Templet of Hendersonville, TN; a brother, Don C. (Emily Jo) Creech of Barnwell; five grandchildren- Ryan (Amy) Grubbs of Lexington, SC; Megan Grubbs of Barnwell; Cullen (Kristen) Bolen of Williston, SC; Stoney and Daylin Templet of Hendersonville, TN; and a great granddaughter, Miller Grubbs of Lexington, SC as well as a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Marion Charles Funderburk and a brother and sister in law, Billy Lee and Anne Ross Creech. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Mole Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, May 6,2015 at Barnwell First Baptist Church officiated by Reverend Keith Richardson with burial immediately following at Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery, Highway 278, Barnwell, SC. Memorial donations can be made to the Funderburk-LaFavor Animal Shelter, Barnwell, SC The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support; with a special thanks to Pastor Keith, Vicky Croft, Melanie Griffith and Jennifer King.
