Here he felt God’s call to the ministry and was ordained by his home church. He was a graduate of Blackville High School (1964), an A.A. from Anderson College (now Anderson University), a B.A. from Baptist College (now Charleston Southern University), and a Th.M from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Billy had a passion for history and writing. He was a member of the Blackville Historical Society. He authored 12 books, 10 of those being local church histories.
