Obituary for Clifford "Cliff" Robert Gardner, Sr.

Clifford "Cliff" Robert Gardner, Sr., 88, of Barnwell, SC entered into eternal rest on January 22 at Veterans' Victory House in Walterboro, SC surrounded by his family and friends. Mr. Gardner was born in Sumter, SC on May 22, 1927. He was the son of Mr. Laurens Banks Gardner and Mae Delle Hemingway Gardner of Sumter, SC. He joined the US Navy during WWII and served on two destroyers, the USS Waldron and the USS Beatty as a Seaman First Class. He met and married Betty Jean Bramlett of Mayesville, SC in 1949. After working for JC Penney, Co in Sumter and Greenville, SC as a salesperson and manager, Mr. Gardner moved his family to Williston, SC where he opened a Texaco service station. He then moved to Barnwell and operated an Esso for 9 years at Five Points, an Exxon on Jackson and eventually owned and operated Gardner's Auto Sales until his retirement. Mr. Gardner also taught at the Barnwell STEP School where he instructed adults in business and auto mechanics. He opened the first independently owed "fast food" in Barnwell, "Cliff's". He was a member of the Barnwell Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. He helped develop the Legion Ministry facility and for a number of years operated a bicycle ministry, repairing and giving bicycles to orphanages and others. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner enjoyed fishing, gardening, ruby mining, camping, yard sales, and raising five children. Mr. Gardner loved to have BBQ's for large family gatherings. He was a beloved father, friend, and community member who will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and faithfulness and a father and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Gardner (Mae Delle) of Sumter, SC his beloved wife of 58 years, Betty B. Gardner. He is survived by his sister Mrs. J.M. Reynolds, III (Carolyn Gardner) of Orangeburg, SC, five children: Cindy Gardner (Terry) Pack of Barnwell, Clifford Robert "Robbie" Gardner, Jr. of Harlingen, TX., Deidre Gardner (Alan) Hayes of Williston, Nevilee Gardner of Barnwell, and Mr. and Mrs. David and Susan (Tucker) Gardner of Barnwell; five grandchildren: Mr. and Mrs. Rusty (Latoya) Pack of Oak Ridge, TN, Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan (Misty Pack) Skvoretz of Charlotte, NC., Mr. and Mrs. Stephan (Jennifer Stokes) Hergatt of Barnwell, Sarah Elizabeth Gardner and Benjamin Lawrence Gardner of Barnwell, 6 great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, and cousins. His laughter will be missed by all. Viewing will be at Mole Funeral Home on Monday, January 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Mole Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on January 26, 2016, at the Barnwell Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at Barnwell Memorial Cemetery immediately following the services.
