Obituary for Clyde Richard "Rick" Sumner
A celebration of life service with Masonic Rites for C. Richard (Rick) Sumner, 66, of Barnwell County, South Carolina will be held Sunday August 9, 2015 at 2pm at Ghents Branch Baptist Church, Denmark, SouthCarolina, conducted by Reverend Birt Petty and Pastor Charles F. Sumner III. Visitation to follow in The Family Life Center. Rick was born September 8, 1948 in Shelby, North Carolina and passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 6, 2015 at his home. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda Seay Sumner, daughter Synthia Sumner, son Rickey Sumner and a very special grandson Carson who loved his Pop very much and thought his Pop was "the coolest." He is also survived by a brother Charles F. (Chuck) Sumner III (Kay) of Charleston, South Carolina. He was predeceased by his parents C.F. Sumner Jr., and Louise Kendrick Sumner and a sister Susie Dorothy Sumner. Rick was a big man in statute and heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand; expecting nothing in return. As a young man he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Navy Seabees. He fulfilled his dreams of flying by becoming a licensed private and commercial pilot. Rick retired October 1, 2009, as Electrical Maintenance Manager with Union Camp/International Paper Company, Eastover Plant. He put to use his God given talents as a leader, Jack of all Trades, skilled carpenter and singer. He served his church in many capacities such as Deacon, choir member, soloist and builder. For many years he worked alongside other church members every week in order to build a Family Life Center that could be enjoyed by many. This was truly a labor of love for him. He also used his talents as a member of the Hilda Masonic Lodge #426, serving as Master in 1994. Over the years his hobbies have included fishing, hunting and bee keeping. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Ghents Branch Baptist Church Building Fund, 1974 Ghents Branch Road, Denmark, South Carolina 29042, will be appreciated.
