Obituary for Connie D. Fortanbary
Connie D Fortanbary, 74, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother of Barnwell, SC, died Sunday, May 17th, 2015, at Tranquility Hospice Care in Marietta, Georgia. Born March 29th, 1941, in Staunton, Virginia, she was the proud daughter of Denver Jackson Davis and Martha Jane Davis. She graduated from Limestone College with a BA degree in History. In 1959, she began a long and illustrious career with school districts throughout the southeast, including her last educator role with the Barnwell school system, until her retirement in 2000. Following her career as a middle school and high school teacher, Connie embarked on her second career passion as a group travel manager, having most recently worked for AAA of the Carolina's. Up until her final days, Connie enjoyed traveling the world and being with friends and family. By 2015, she had traveled to 6 of the 7 world's continents and saw many of the world's greatest wonders. Her passion for travel and time with her family were her favorite pastimes. She also loved and was recognized as a community leader wherever she lived. Connie was a past president of the Winton Assembly, past chairman of the Festival in the Round, wrote, produced and directed the Edgefield County bicentennial celebration and was recognized as a South Carolina Law Educator of the Year recipient. Her kind heart, generous nature and warm smile brightened all of our lives. So with tearful eyes we say goodbye, but with happy hearts we cherish her memory. In addition to her parents, Connie Fortanbary was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Fortanbary. She is survived by her brother, Dr. John Jackson Davis of Roanoke, VA, her four sons, Michael Wayne Fortanbary of Leesburg, VA, David Jackson Fortanbary of Marietta, GA, Charles Edward Fortanbary of Charlotte, NC and John Lloyd Fortanbary of Columbia, SC. She has eight grandchildren, Will Fortanbary, Alex Fortanbary, Lauren McGowan, Andrew Fortanbary, Ashley Fortanbary, David Morrison, Jackson Fortanbary and Parker Fortanbary, great-grand daughters Jordon Bowles and Skylar McGowan and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends at Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell, SC on Friday, May 22, 2015 from 6pm to 8pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 23rd at 11:00am at the Barnwell Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery. The service will be led by the Rev.
