Obituary for David Griffen DuRant Jr.
David Griffen DuRant Jr of Barnwell passed away at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga early Thursday, November 15th, 2018.
Mr. DuRant was born March 2, 1930 in the Mont Claire community of Darlington County, SC. Born to David Griffen DuRant Sr and Mildred (Bagnal) DuRant. He was born to a large close knit family of 3 brothers and 4 sisters. He was the eldest sibling and was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, James Oliver DuRant and Richard Kenneth DuRant.
He is survived by his brother Charles DuRant (Annette) of Biloxi, Ms, and three sisters, Irene D. Poole, Catherine Allen (Millard) and Virginia Baird all of Florence SC.
He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in San Diego, Ca, Hawaii and Kwajalein Island in the Marshall Islands. Upon his return from military service, he began his life's work as a 3rd generation Atlantic Coast Line (now CSX) railroad employee as a freight agent. He was employed with CSX railroad for approximately 35 years and resided in Florence, SC, Eutawville, SC and Red Springs, NC prior to relocating to Barnwell, SC.
Mr. DuRant enjoyed fishing, cheering for the Atlanta Braves and watching both the Clemson and USC football.
He was a member of the American Legion and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Barnwell where he served as Treasurer of the Men's Sunday School class.
Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Sunday, November 18, 2018 in the First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Keith Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell Co. Memorial Cemetery at the airport. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 6-8 pm at Mole Funeral Home or at the home of David DuRant III.. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to the Barnwell First Baptist Church 161 Allen St. Barnwell SC 29812.
Survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Halford DuRant of Barnwell, daughter Anne Maddox (Keith) of Spartanburg, son David G. DuRant III of Barnwell, grandson Andrew Keith Maddox (Michele) of Inman, SC and great grand children, Brodie (6) and Anslie (3) Maddox.
