Dorothy Janice Warlick Cortez, Barnwell, SC
Janice Warlick Cortez, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at home after a short battle with cancer.
Jan was born on February 18, 1936 in Belwood, North Carolina, the daughter of Everette Cecil and Ovenis Warlick. She graduated from Aiken High School in 1955 marrying the love of her life, Charles Edmund (Ed) Cortez.
Jan was a loving wife and mother who loved working in her yard and garden. After settling in Barnwell, SC, Jan worked for Dr. Philip Claytor for 35 years until Dr. Claytor’s retirement. She was a devoted nurse, bookkeeper, and friend until his retirement and death.
Jan was a faithful and active member of Barnwell First Baptist Church.
She served on numerous committees and taught Sunday School for many years. She was an active member of the Nursing Home Group and Jail Ministry, sang in the church choir, and volunteered in the church office. She also loved traveling with the First Baptist Young at Heart Group.
Jan was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Ed Cortez and her parents, Cecil and Vene Warlick. Jan is survived by her children, Cecilia Cortez Plexico of Barnwell, SC, Charles Edmund, II (Chuck) and Terri Cortez of Pelzer, SC and David and Chrisa Cortez Sanders of Barnwell, SC; eight grandchildren: Heather Leann Cunic, Katherine (Katie) Waters Plexico, Nicole Ashley Sanders, Samantha Renee Sanders, Megan Elizabeth Cortez, James Mitchell Plexico, Makenzie Laura Sanders, and Rebekah Lawton Cortez; two brothers: Larry Everette and Cornelia Warlick of High Point, NC and Daniel Cecil and Lana Warlick of Casar, NC; and her life long, best friend, Linda M. Kearse.
Funeral Services will be held at Barnwell First Baptist Church on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverends Stephen Burnette and Billy E. Vaughn officiating. The family will receive visitors from 11:00 – 1:00 prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Barnwell County Memorial (Airport) Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Barnwell First Baptist Church Road to Freedom, 161 Allen Street, Barnwell, SC 29812. The family is most grateful for all the help they received during Jan’s illness.
