Obituary for Dr. Gerald Stuart Paulk
Dr. Gerald Stuart Paulk of Barnwell passed away on Sunday November 24, 2013. Dr. Paulk was born on May 21, 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a son of the late Lott George and Gladys Chaffin Paulk. Gerald, loving known as "Doc" to many, was a graduate of Ocilla High School and Palmer College of Chiropractic. Gerald served his country as a paratrooper during WWII in Company D, 2nd BN, and 501st PIR 101st Airborne Divison. He participated in the D-Day Normandy Landing, the Holland Invasion, and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, and two Presidential Unit Citations. He received the Purple Heart with Cluster and the French Liberty Medal awarded by the President of France. Before being honorably discharged, he was a jump instructor at Fort Benning Georgia. Dr. Paulk practiced his profession for over fifty years in Barnwell, SC. He was appointed by the Governor as a member of the South Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners for two terms. He served many terms on the legislative committee of his profession and was instrumental in improving the laws related to the practice of Chiropractic. He was a member of the South Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief Team, was a licensed amateur (HAM) radio operator, and held his pilot's license. Dr. Paulk was a long time member of the South Carolina Chapter of Gideons International and served a term as president. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Barnwell, he taught Sunday school for fifty years. He also served as deacon and trustee from time to time. Gerald is survived by his adoring wife of 67 years, Helen Gibson Paulk of the home; his brother, Vernon Paulk of McDonough, Georgia; sons, Wendell Stuart (Gail) Paulk of Irmo, South Carolina, George Phillip (Pamela) Paulk of McDonough, Georgia; daughters, Brenda Paulk (James "BoBo") Richardson of Barnwell South Carolina and Robin Paulk (Timothy) Wedemyer of St. Petersburg Florida; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday November 27, 2013 at the Barnwell First Baptist Church with burial immediately following in the Barnwell county Memory Gardens on Reynolds Rd with military rites accorded. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Tuesday, November 26 Th at Mole Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Barnwell First Baptist Church, 161 Allen St. Barnwell, SC. 29812, The Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, TN. 37214-0800, or Dwight D.
