Obituary for Dr. Henry Gibson
Dr. Henry Wright Gibson died Saturday, April 12, 2014 in Columbia, South Carolina at the age of 89. Visitation will be at Barnwell United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 15th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 16th at 11:00 am at Barnwell United Methodist Church. Dr. Gibson was born on June 18, 1924 in Batesburg, South Carolina. He graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School, Wofford College and The Medical College of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Gibson's studies at Wofford College were interrupted as he joined the United States Army Air Force and became a B-24 bomber pilot in the 8th Air Force 446th Bomber Group stationed in England. He flew 25 missions during World War II. Following his service in World War II, Dr. Gibson completed his studies at Wofford College and The Medical College of South Carolina. He received his medical degree in 1950. In 1951 Dr. Gibson moved to Barnwell, South Carolina where he practiced family medicine for 63 years until his death. He loved the art of medicine and the people of Barnwell County. It is there that he could hunt, fish, farm and play his beloved game of golf. Throughout Dr. Gibson's career, he was honored by his patients, friends and medical peers. Some of these honors include Barnwell County Man of the Year, the Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, the State of South Carolina Order of the Silver Crescent, and the South Carolina Family Physician of the Year. In 2009, Wofford College bestowed upon Dr. Gibson the Honorary Doctorate of Science Degree, describing him as the "quintessential country doctor." Dr. Gibson felt called to care for those with no access to health care. This began a long history of medical mission trips which culminated in his founding the Carolina Honduras Health Foundation. After much prayer, hard work and the generous support of others, a medical/dental clinic was built in Limon, Honduras in 1997. A satellite clinic was built in Icoteos, Honduras in 2000. In March 2014 Dr. Gibson participated in his 49th medical mission trip. Dr. Gibson was predeceased by his parents, Dr. William Thornwell Gibson and Kate Bates Wright Gibson, four sisters and a brother. Dr. Gibson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evie Gilliland Gibson; four daughters, Eve Gibson Daniel (Rich), Amy Gibson Montague (Buck), Rosalyn Gibson Morrison, and Katherine Gibson Fritze (Dan); eleven grandchildren, Kinsley, Chad, Emily, Felicia, Rosalyn, Will, Eliza, Katherine, Andrew, Caroline and William; three step grandchildren, Eli, Addison (Catherine) and Parke; and one step great grandchild, Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials be sent to the Carolina Honduras Health Foundation, P.O. Box 528, Barnwell, South Carolina 29812. Dr. Gibson truly lived the words of his favorite scripture, Matthew 10:8, "Freely you have received, freely give." Please visit our online registry at molefh.com
