Obituary for Dr. Robert B. Valliant
Dr. Robert B. Valliant, 73, passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at his home in Barnwell, SC. Dr. Valliant was born in PECO, Texas, son of Robert E. and Mary Hinkle Valliant. He has one sister, Melada Valliant Davis of Carthage, Texas and one brother R. Thomas Valliant of Amarillo, Texas. His is survived by his wife, Mary Theresa Valliant. Dr. Valliant has one step son, Christopher (Lisa) and a grandson, Christopher Ryan Wisner. Dr. Valliant served in the United States Army after High School and served as an Intelligence operator in Japan. After his tour in Japan, Dr. Valliant pursued a BA Degree from the University of Texas in 1966. He obtained an MA from the University of Hawaii in 1968. He received his PhD in history from the University of Hawaii in 1970. Dr. Valliant was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and studied a year in Japan. Dr. Valliant was tenured as Professor of Asian studies with the University of Hawaii from 1986-2009. He was fluent in several languages. Upon his retirement, Dr. Valliant relocated to South Carolina and then made his home in Barnwell. The visitation to honor Dr. Valliant will be held Friday, November 8th at 12pm at the Mole Funeral Home Chapel in Barnwell. The memorial service will follow at 1:00pm, also at Mole's. In lieu of flowers, Robert requested that donations be made to the Barnwell Presbyterian Church Legion Ministry Center Soup Kitchen; it helps feed the hungry in our area.
