Obituary for Edward R. Hill, Jr.
Edward R Hill, Jr., 93, born in Springfield, Massachusetts, 10/25/1922, passed away in Aiken SC, 6/16/16. Ed, a fan of big band era music, played the trombone and with his musical talents, served in an army band during WW2 in North Africa and later Europe where he met his wife Eleonore in Grenoble, France. After the war, Ed credited the GI bill for having provided the opportunity for him to have attended Bates College in Maine, where he received his bachelor's degree in French. He subsequently taught French in the Province of Quebec and the Denver area and was head-master of a Denver area private school for a number of years. In addition to Ed's fluency in French, he had a remarkable intellect and memory for history, politics, and music and was a voracious reader until the end of his life, always keeping apprised of current events. Ed and his wife, Eleonore moved to Barnwell, South Carolina in 1999, where they discovered their love for South Carolina and its hospitable people. Ed is preceded in death by his wife, Eleonore, and is survived by his son, Donald F. Hill, wife, Esther, and son Shane, all of Barnwell, SC, as well as his daughter, Linda M. Hill of Albuquerque, NM, and her children, Coby L. Wikselaar, Lindsey C. Wikselaar, and Jay W. Wikselaar. He additionally formed a strong friendship with Martha McPherson, now of Boulder, CO, who credits Ed with "quick wit" and ability to "...regale all with his never ending jokes and stories, always with a twinkle in his eye. " We are all honored to have learned from his insightful and unique views on life and will continue to carry him in our hearts.
