Obituary for Elma Lazar Connelly
Elma Lazar Connelly, beloved wife of 61 years of the late Robert E. Connelly, Sr., passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019. Mrs. Connelly was born January 2, 1926 to Calder Baynard Lazar and Nettie Mae Lazar Williams. She was a native of Barnwell, SC before she and Robert eloped on September 25, 1942. She made Ulmer her home after that. Mrs. Connelly was a life-long member of Bethel Baptist Church and was involved in numerous social and service organizations. Her family and community loved her down home cooking, especially her delicious cakes. She often asked her husband for a larger table so everyone could gather and fellowship together in one room. When she finally got the table they had to expand the kitchen just to accommodate it! As late as 3 years ago family (20 or more people) still gathered around that table once every week to eat one of her home cooked meals – complete with homemade biscuits and desserts. Even at 93, Mrs. Connelly seemed immortal. She was the epitome of Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” The countless days she spent rocking babies and humming hymns are forever etched in the hearts of her family. She truly exhibited what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus. It is safe to say that she gave a lot of love and laughter. She also said a lot of prayers and shed a lot of tears. She lived through more than many, but persevered through the hard times. She was a tremendous example of steadfast and obedient faith.
