Obituary for Erma Dell Blackburn Pack
Barnwell SC After almost 97 years of faithful service to her Lord, Jesus Christ, Mrs. Erma Dell Blackburn Pack, widow of Richard Hayes "Dick" Pack, joined the saints in Heaven on December 4, 2014. Born on Feb. 1,1918in Smithville, TN. She was the oldest of four children born to Robert and Liddie Blackburn. She grew up in Old Hickory, TN. And graduated from DuPont High School where she played on their school's state championship basketball team. Sports remained a constant in her life, with a husband and two sons she became a loyal fan of the Atlanta Braves and the USC Gamecocks. She married Richard Pack on April 7, 1940, and their first child was three weeks old at the beginning of WWII. She told many family stories about their life during that time. They lived in Old Hickory TN, Hanford WA and Barnwell SC. She was a former employee of the original Jitney Jungle grocery store and then the Piggly Wiggly, as well as Shuron Optical. Always a woman of great faith, she was a charter member of Hagood Avenue Baptist Church where she served in any way needed until she moved to the nursing home. She had been in the choir, taught Sunday school, served as a church hostess and leader of the prayer chain. Her life was a witness to Jesus Christ, and she was the embodiment of the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Mrs. Pack was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Robert Jay Blackburn and Walter Brown Blackburn, her husband, and her oldest son, Richard Terry Pack. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Willie Mae "Bill" Agee , son Stephen Hayes (Mell) Pack, daughter in law Cindy Gardner (Terry ) Pack, grandchildren, Noel (Erica) Pack, Joel Heather) Pack, Travis Pack, Russell Terry (LaToya) Pack, and Misty Pack (Jonathan) Skvoretz, eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family is deeply appreciative of the excellent care given to Mrs. Erma for all the years she has lived at the Barnwell County Nursing Home which is now Pruitt Health, as well as her recent care at Southern Palmetto Hospital, and Hospice of Pruitt Health. Funeral services will be held at Mole Funeral Home in Barnwell SC on Saturday, December 6, at 2 PM with Dr. Ken Catoe officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell County Memory Gardens on Reynolds Rd. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Hagood Ave. Baptist Church, 1144 Hagood Ave., Barnwell SC.
