Obituary for Etta Holland Mixon
Etta Holland Mixon, 81, of Barnwell, SC, passed away on Sunday, October 10, in her home after complications of a lengthy illness. She was born in Augusta, GA, November 17, 1939; the first daughter of Marvin (Mockie) and Hettie Mathis Holland of Barnwell, SC. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at the First Baptist Church of Barnwell, SC. Visitation will be held the church sanctuary one hour prior to the service, also a visitation will be held Wednesday night at Mole Funeral Home from 6-7PM. Interment will be held immediately following in the Methodist Church cemetery.
Etta was Valedictorian of Barnwell High School class of 1957. She was graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of South Carolina in 1967 and went on to earn her master’s degree in education from USC in 1975.
It was her love of history that guided her into the teaching profession where she taught and influenced generations of Barnwell residents. Her career spanned over thirty-five years with the Barnwell Public School System. Twice she was named Teacher of the Year (1984 and 1985). Etta’s students’ love for her continued to be expressed whenever they saw her about town. Afterall, who could ever forget their first-grade teacher? Annually it was Mrs. Mixon who invited her entire class to visit the family home, enjoy a delightful picnic while sharing interesting hobbies with them.
Etta was an excellent swimmer, an avid reader, enjoyed traveling all over the world, peddled her bicycle all over town and at The River. She grafted and grew exceptionally beautiful camellias while sharing them with everyone. She took great pride in manicuring her yard. A frequent choice for “Yard of the Month”, her favorite activity was mowing the lawn. While Etta was a University of South Carolina graduate, she fiercely loved the Clemson Tigers. You could often find her in Death Valley or on the road at bowl game cheering on the Tigers all the way to the national championship.
Etta was predeceased in death by her parents and her husband of forty-seven years, Fred D. Mixon. Survivors include a daughter Jill Mixon Mickle of Orlando, FL; a granddaughter Holland P. Mickle of Charlotte, NC; a sister Louise (Weesie) Fickling of Blackville and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friends of the Libraries of Barnwell County or to a charity of your choice. The Family would like to express their appreciation to her caregivers: Shay Dorch, Shirlene Dorch, Earlene (Fluff) Hunt and DayBreak Adult Care of Aiken.
