Obituary for Gary David Hooper
Gary David Hooper, 73, went to be with his Lord on Friday, October 2, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Gary was born in Barnwell County on January 31, 1947. He was the son of the late Leroy and Deborah Black Hooper. He worked at the Barnwell Post Office for 22 years and retired from his self-owned business, Hooper’s Lawn and Grounds, in 2002. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Pulpit Search Committee, Homecoming Committee, etc. Gary served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-1968. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart Medal for wounds sustained in the Vietnam War.
Gary was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle. To know Gary was to love him. His beautiful smile and great personality brought joy to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His family loved him very much and will miss him until we are rejoined together in heaven.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 8, 2020 at 3 pm at Barnwell First Baptist Church with Rev. Kyle Hardin, Rev. John Nixon, Rev. Jeffrey Ray and Rev. Farrell Ray officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 from 6-8 pm at Mole Funeral Home. COVID-19 rules will be enforced. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Maxine Pender Hooper of Barnwell, SC; daughters, Amy (Darin) Hutto of Denmark, SC and Erica (Cory) Dukes of Barnwell, SC; sons, Gary McDonald “Ski” (Wendy) Hooper of Barnwell, SC, Travis Jacob (Daphne) Hooper of Barnwell, SC, and Matthew Thomas Brew (Vanessa) Hooper of Barnwell, SC; 13 grandchildren - Wayne Hutto, Taylor Hooper (Daniel) Alexander, Pender Nolind, Hunter (Hannah) Hutto, Shelby Hooper (Jerred) Burdette, Sarah Hooper, Mattison Hooper, Alee Hooper, Skyler Hooper, Baylee Hooper, Carlee Hooper, Logan Sturkie, Britten Sturkie, and a new grandson, Matthew Gary Brew Hooper, is due to be born in February 2021; Great Grandchildren – Connor Hutto, Mary Chilton and Margaret Alexander, Hartlynn and Hooper Hutto, and Eli and Riley Dukes; Brother, Jon (Kim) Hansen of Salt Lake City, Utah; Sister-in-Law, Nancy Smith and Brother-in-Law, Donnie (Sandy) Pender; Aunts, Gatsie Paulling of St. Matthews, SC and Erline Wiles of Ft. Motte, SC; and many precious nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be: Hunter Hutto, Wayne Hutto, Britten Sturkie, Bru Pender, Britt Pender, Chip Nolind, Donnie Spitzer, and Edwin Jones.
Honorary pallbearers will be present and past deacons at Friendship Baptist Church.
