Obituary for Gerald Conrad Johnson

Gerald Conrad Johnson, passed away peacefully at Blackville Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Blackville, SC on Saturday, May 13, 2023 after an extended illness, at the age of 78. Gerald touched many lives and had many nicknames such as Mr. Clean, Spider amongst others. He had an incredible sense of humor and kept the Nurses laughing, even in his last days.


Gerald was born in Savannah, GA on September 8, 1944 to the late Rupert Johnson and Bertie Peacock Johnson. The middle child of 3, he followed in his dad’s footsteps and spent a lot of time hunting and fishing and had many trophies to show for it. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors.


Gerald grew up in Savannah. He attended Blessed Sacrament School, Benedictine High School and graduated in 1963 from Savannah High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted on June 20, 1963 in the U.S.M.C. and performed his basic training in Parris Island, SC. He was transferred to Camp Lejeune, NC where he remained stationed until his honorary discharge. He received the Rifle Expert Badge, Good Conduct Medal and was recommended for reenlistment.

Gerald then decided to continue his education and attended and was graduated from the Construction Electricity program at North Georgia Vocational and Technical School in Clarkesville, Georgia in 1964. He completed his apprenticeship program at Savannah Vocational and Technical School and taught wiring and circuitry upon successful completion. He became a Journeyman Electrician in 1969.


Gerald was a member of the I.B.E.W. #508 (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) in Savannah, GA. He was appointed on the Examining Board in 1975 and Treasurer in 1978. He spent his career working in the electrical field and eventually started his own firm. He was a former member of the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.

Gerald is survived by his son Conrad Johnson and his daughter Melody Robinson and 4 grandchildren, Janna, Chance, Karter and Kent. He is also survived by his brother Clifford Johnson and his sister Vickie Countryman and several nieces and nephews.


There will be no service and a private family cremation. His ashes will be spread in the Savannah River at a later date per his request. Donations in Gerald’s memory may be made to Hospice or the charity of choice.
