Our sweet mama, Guida Jane Jones Creech, has finished her earthly walk. When we told her happy birthday on August 31, she said, “I'm old.” When we told her she was 98, she rolled her eyes so dramatically, a sassy 13-year-old girl would have been jealous. Mama was tired, and while our hearts are broken, we rejoice that she is whole and experiencing the profound joy of being with her Savior. We can imagine our daddy, Harold, and the entire Jones clan all clamoring to welcome her home. Home– the place she always wanted to be.
Mama grew up with her seven siblings–Claude, Edna, Ethel, Gertie, Ronda, Eula, and Lora–in the mountains of Ashe County, North Carolina. She regaled us with wonderful stories of how her parents, Tom and Cora Jones, raised their family on a farm on the banks of the picturesque New River. Her stories of their lives on that river certainly included the hardships, but the overarching sense was the happiness, laughter, and love of family and home.
A lifelong sports fan, Mama would proudly tell of helping lead her high school basketball team to the state title game. Later, she cheered loudly for Gamecock football and basketball– and even baseball when they were winning. For all of her sweetness, Mama could be a bit of a sore loser.
Mama has always been a hard worker, strong, and independent. As a young woman, she seemed to think nothing of moving alone to another state to get a job. She worked in the secret city of Oak Ridge, Tennessee and then later at Dupont in Martinsville, Virginia. She proudly bought her first new car with those earnings.
Mama’s baby sister, Lora, introduced her to our daddy. They were married in 1953 and settled in Barnwell to establish their home and family. With our births (Danny and Pam), an unconditional love bloomed inside our precious mama. Even though we both experienced the sharp sting of her switch, we have never ever doubted her love for us. That unconditional love only grew as her family grew:
Son, Danny (Stephanie) Creech, Sharon Creech - friend and mother of Mama’s first four grandchildren Grandson, Jeremy (Tina) Creech; great granddaughter, Jemma Grandson, Matthew (Mel) Creech Grandson, Corey Creech; great grandson, Conner Granddaughter, Holly (Kevin) Farrar; great granddaughters, Emme, Ally, and Baby Girl (on-the-way) Daughter, Pam (favorite son-in-law, Terry) Black Granddaughter, Emily Black Granddaughter, Eve (Clayton) Meisner
We all knew she loved us, and her favorite way to show that was by feeding us– whether it was a meal before a game, a holiday spread, or a simple slice of cornbread, she generously nourished us.
She also nourished our faith by teaching us and, more importantly, by living her faith openly. We remember kneeling beside our beds, praying with her. She and Daddy took us all to Sunday School and church at Reedy Branch, and she served there as long as she was able. She balanced working outside our home and caring for us, demonstrating how to trust God and love completely in the busyness of day to day to life.
In her later years, she cared for our daddy when he got sick and then lived independently until her body just began to give out. She loved the simple pleasures of rocking (quite spiritedly) on her front porch and tending to her flowers of every color and variety.
We are grateful for the tender care she received from the staff at Pruitt Health in Barnwell. They loved our sweet mama even though she frequently peppered them with questions about when she was going home.
Home– where Mama always wanted to be. She is Home now.
