Harmon Nelva Hays, 96, passed away peacefully at his home on February 20th, 2026, surrounded by family. He was born on February 4th, 1930, in Hardburly, Kentucky to the late Jiddy D. Hays and Martha Sizemore Hays.
Harmon attended Hindman High School and then graduated from Carr Creek High School in Kentucky. Harmon married the late Dottie Amburgey Hays on August 20th, 1949, and spent a wonderful life together for over 75 years! He and Dottie spent summers in Waynesville, NC where his children and extended family often visited. Harmon was a long-time employee of DuPont working on military projects at the Savannah River Plant.
Harmon was predeceased by sons Jack and Mack Hays, by Sisters Madeline Hall, Wanda Barker, Clella Barker, Elsie Black, Kathlyn Riddle and Nedra Judy, and by his brother Newell Hays. Harmon is survived by his son Keith, daughter Karen (Robert) Riss, his cousin Martha Barker Rendall, grandchildren Trenton Hays, Jason Hays, Amanda Hays, and Jonathan Printz, great grandchildren Justin Durden, Tyler Durden, and great great grandson Elijah Durden.
Harmon is remembered for his decades of loving care for his severely disabled wife Dottie. Harmon was a man of many talents including carpentry, furniture construction, farming, and all facets of the mechanical trades. He loved working with his hands.
Visitation will be conducted on Tuesday March 3rd, 2 PM at Hagood Avenue Baptist Church located at 110 Franklin St, Barnwell, SC 29812 with funeral services following at 3pm with Dr. Brandon Sandifer officiating. Graveside service will follow at Barnwell County Memory Gardens.
