Obituary for Herman Etheridge Still
Herman Etheridge Still, of Lebanon, OR, more commonly known as Pete Still, was born April 3, 1928 in Blackville, SC to James “Wheat’ Still and Mary Elizabeth Gantt Still who was known to all as Mama Still. The family later moved to Barnwell, SC where he grew up. Pete served in the Marines during World War II and went on to a long successful career as a Sales Operation Superintendent for Swift and Co. meat packing and later Esmark Corp until he retired in 1984.

Pete was known to the Labor unions as “Florida Man” and was requested to negotiate labor contracts all over the country due to his reputation for being fair and equitable. After 35 years, he retired at 55 and started a second career transporting cars for car dealerships. He enjoyed the open road.
Pete was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was very involved with his children and grandchildren’s sporting events & activities. He had a strong faith with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Pete enjoyed horseback riding and was known to do tricks on bikes and with yo-yo’s that dazzled the neighborhood kids. He also enjoyed a competitive game of jacks or paddle ball with his children. He was a Boy Scout leader and a baseball umpire for many years and enjoyed traveling and camping all over the US.

Pete is survived by sisters Mildred Still Stevens of Rhode Island and Janice "Neecy" Walker of Barnwell, SC. and by the mother of his children, Shirley (Stockwell) Still, sons Craig Etheridge (Marilyn) Still and Gregory Paul (Sheryl) Still, and daughters, Elizabeth Ruth (William) Eddings, Sheryl Lynn (Thomas) Braun who all reside in Oregon, and Marlese Anne (Michael) Hollenback of New Jersey. His is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pete is preceded in Death by sisters Lurline Still Davis, Eleanor Still Keel & brother Emory Still.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday July 15th at 10:30 am at the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery, Ellenton Street (US 278 near the airport) in Barnwell, SC. In Lieu of Flowers donations can be made in memory to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (www.nleomf.com).
