Obituary for Imogene Hartzog Vickery
Imogene Hartzog Vickery, 84, of Barnwell, was the flame of her husband's life for 65 years. She died peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, April 16, 2015. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 17 at Mole Funeral Home in Barnwell. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at First Baptist Church of Barnwell with Rev. Ricky Creech and Rev. Keith Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell United Methodist Church cemetery on Hagood Avenue. The Barnwell City Fire Department will be honorary pallbearers. Mrs. Vickery was born January 10, 1931 in Barnwell and grew up in the Galilee Road section of Sleightown. She was the fifth of six children born to the late Koger and Carlena Collins Hartzog. She married her husband Lloyd Charles Vickery Jr., the former fire chief of Barnwell, on December 11, 1949. She worked part-time while raising their two children. She was a payroll clerk at Salkehatchie Electric Cooperative before going to SCE&G as a customer service representative, eventually in a full-time capacity. She remained there until her retirement in 1982. Mrs. Vickery loved God and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Barnwell as well as the Eastern Star. Affectionately known as "Meme" to family and "Mrs. Chief" to many friends and members of the fire department, Mrs. Vickery loved her family deeply and enjoyed spending time with them, whether at outings to Lake Murray or chaperoning school band trips. As one of the neighborhood mothers on Main Street in Barnwell, she was a gracious hostess to countless boys and girls. She loved watching birds and always kept plenty of feeders around her yard. As a true Southerner she loved sweet tea and almost always had a glass on hand. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Koger Hartzog Jr. of Barnwell, Denzil "Dink" (Carolyn) Hartzog Sr. of Orangeburg, and James "Tootsie" (Mary) Hartzog of Orangeburg; one sister, Jewel Hartzog (Curtis) Saylor of Barnwell; and a grandson, Lloyd Charles "Little Charles" Vickery IV of Barnwell. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Lloyd Vickery Jr. of the home; one son, Lloyd Charles (Sharon) Vickery III of Barnwell; one daughter, Carla Ann (Mark) Eggl of Greenville; three grandchildren, Ashley Eggl and Stephen Eggl of Greenville and Jonathan Vickery of Barnwell; one brother, Dean (Joan) Hartzog of Barnwell; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sibling, Koger Hartzog, Jr. James "Tootsie" Hartzog, Denzil "Dink" Hartzog, and Jewel H. Saylor. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Elevator Fund at Barnwell First Baptist Church, 161 Allen Street, Barnwell, S.C. 29812.
