Iris was born in Olar, South Carolina, to Chester and Rozeal Still on November 29, 1932. She attended grade school in Olar and moved to Barnwell when she was 14. She graduated from Barnwell High School in 1950. After graduation, Iris worked as a secretary for DHEC. Later, she worked for the South Carolina Department of Probation and Parole. While working at the courthouse, Iris met Lester, who was a postal worker at the time. She married Lester Cave Grubbs on October 18, 1953. They were married for 53 years and were blessed with two sons. Iris was an adoring mother and spent time at home with her sons to raise them. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Barnwell for 74 years. She loved the Lord Jesus and faithfully witnessed to all of her grandchildren, who affectionately called her Mama Grubbs. Iris also served the Lord by teaching the adult ladies Sunday School class as well as working with Mr. Grubbs teaching the children and middle school classes. Iris enjoyed gathering with the family, gardening, typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. She belonged to the Barnwell Garden Club for many years. Iris will be greatly missed and remembered for her Christ-like love and faithfulness.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband and companion of 53 years, Lester Cave Grubbs and two sisters Elizabeth Dodson and Gloria Birt.
Iris is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Riley and Janice Grubbs and Marty and Susie Grubbs all of Barnwell, South Carolina. Her grandchildren: Jennifer (Chad) Manders, Tracey Thomas, Leslie Grubbs, Ryan (Amy) Grubbs, and Megan (Charles) Melton. Her great-grandchildren: Jaiden Thomas, Maddox Manders, Miller Grubbs, Price Grubbs, Hyatt Melton, and Thompson Grubbs. The family of Iris wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the hospice care nursing staff and caregivers especially nurses Lynn, Cynthia, Lynda, and Grace. Also, thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Pruitt Health of Barnwell. Lastly, and most importantly, the Connor Sunday School Class for their commitment and unfailing ministry of consistently reaching out to our sweet Mama Grubbs.
