Obituary for Jack Richard Kirby
Jack Richard Kirby passed away Sunday, August 15, 2021 at age 87, after an illness. Jack was born October 19, 1933, in Rainbow Springs, North Carolina to the late Ira Edgar (Pete) Kirby and Lena Dell nee McClure.
During Jack’s youth, he was an outstanding athlete including his years at Slater-Marietta High School where he graduated in 1953. He enlisted in the US Army where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. After discharge, he attended Furman University in Greenville and graduated in 1959. Jack had a long career of service to others. He worked as a coach and teacher in various schools and YMCAs, helping instill confidence in children and adults with whom he worked.
Throughout Jack’s life he expressed joy though his faith, sports, dancing, and long walks. He spent many hours tending his garden. In 2008, he married the love of his life, Marie Benton Kirby. The 13 years he spent with her were the happiest of his life.
Jack was predeceased by his siblings and his son, Tim Kirby. He is survived by his wife Marie; son Bentz Kirby (May); daughter Katharine Kirby Schofield (Gary); grandchildren Steven Rish (Heather); Richard Kirby; Lauren Kirby Lanier (David); Sarah Kirby, and Stewart Schofield. He is also survived by his stepchildren whom he loved as his own, Dianne Taylor (James) and children Marty, Jacob and Stacia Carrol; Connie Christy (Larry) and children Maranda and Matthew; and Maurice York, his partner Meg Pilkington and children Tiffany, Mitchell, and Tate. Additionally, he is survived by 21 Great-Grandchildren.
There will be a service for family and close friends Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Mole Funeral Home, 9399 Patterson St., Barnwell, SC 29812, phone 803-259-3166. The family requests that anyone planning to attend wear a mask to protect all in attendance.
