Obituary for Joe Allen Dyches
Joe Allen Dyches, 86, died on February 15th at home in Barnwell, South Carolina. Joe was born on September 20, 1939 in Ellenton, SC. He was preceded in death by Peggy Kinard Dyches, his loving wife of 61 years. He was the son of John Harold (Brown) Dyches and Mamie Rosier Dyches. He was preceded in death by both parents, his siblings, Ruth Dyches Taylor, Gene H. Dyches and Ralph T. Dyches, and son-in-law, Robert D. Johnston, III.
After a brief period of employment with the SC Highway Department, Joe enjoyed his career in equipment maintenance at Owens Corning Fiberglas in Aiken. With over 33 years of service as an Industrial Mechanic, he retired in January of 1997. Joe’s strong work ethic extended into civic duties with the SC National Guard for 3 years, too. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, church treasurer, and on numerous church committees. He was most happy when doing work for the church, working in his yard and on his farm, fixing things, and being of service to others. He was extremely proud of his independence and demonstrated his love for God, family and anyone in need throughout every facet of his life. Family was very important to Joe and he reminded his children of this on every phone call and visit.
Survivors include: daughter, Phyllis (Franklin) Smith of Cincinnati, OH; daughter, Sherry Johnston of Roxboro, NC; son, John (Theresa) Dyches of Aiken, SC; granddaughters, Ariel (Diego) Rivera of Raleigh, NC, Gwendolyn (John) Hickner of Charlotte, NC, Lauren Dyches of Aiken, SC; grandsons, Barrett (Hannah Bush) Smith of Cincinnati, OH, Ian Smith (Kelly Sears) of Denver, CO, Hagan Dyches of Aiken, SC; a host of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at the Barnwell Memorial Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. Pastor Dean Deer will officiate while the grandchildren and their spouses will serve as honorary pall bearers. Due to the pandemic, the family requests that only immediate family and the “closest-of-friends” attend while practicing the social distancing guidelines that continue to affect all of our lives. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 8744 Marlboro Avenue, Barnwell, SC. 29812 or to the charity of one’s choice. Mole Funeral Home in Barnwell is in charge of burial arrangements.
