Obituary for Joseph Henry Zorn, Jr.
On the morning of December 2, 2015 "Colonel" Joseph Henry Zorn, Jr went to be with the Lord. He was 82 years old. Joe Zorn, "Colonel" as he was commonly called, was born in Barnwell County, South Carolina on September 14, 1933. He was the youngest of six born to Joseph Henry, Sr and Aileen Padgett Zorn. Joe grew up the son of a farmer and often told stories of plowing fields after school with his own mule. His brothers and sisters always said he was 'the favorite.' He grew up with an outgoing personality, an infectious sense of humor, and a love of hunting and fishing. A Captain with the Department of Natural Resources, he served there 36 years, once being named Officer of the Year for the area. He was instrumental in starting "Hooked on Fishing" in Barnwell, a program designed to involve kids outdoors instead of drugs. A member of the Harmony Lodge #17, he was a Mason for 40 years. An active member of Friendship Baptist Church, he served as Deacon, Sunday School and Training Union teachers. He was known to the community as a generous man who loved giving back and reaching out. A man of many friends, Joe never met a stranger. Hunting buddies, farming pals, and people all around looked forward to hearing his stories. He was a proud member of Dr. Gibson's Supper Club and always enjoyed a good meal with friends. Family was of utmost importance to him. Preceding him in death was his wife of 60 years, Cleo Renew Zorn and son, Sheriff Joseph "Joey" Henry Zorn, III (Pam Posey). Surviving him is his daughter Linda Zorn Tyner (Tommy) of Abbeville, SC. "Pappy" was his favorite title and what his beloved grandkids called him: Tiffani Scott Tyner of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; Joseph "Josh" Henry Zorn, IV (Lacey) of Augusta, GA; Lindsay Tyner Henrichs (Derek) of Due West, SC; Jessica Zorn Lucas (Donnie) of Williston, SC; James Rodney Zorn (Courtney) of Barnwell, SC; Edward Russell Zorn (Becca) of Springfield, SC. Pappy's five great grandchildren brought him much joy! He was known for feeding them whatever he was eating, regardless of what their parents thought, and for loving all of his 'babies' with his whole heart! The family would like to note three ladies who were by his side often in the final years of his life: beloved caretaker Gracie Zorn, cherished niece Amy Zorn, and special companion Betty Renew. Joe Zorn was a 'larger than life' character and will be missed and remembered by many. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (802 N Main St, Abbeville, SC 29620), Connie Maxwell Children's Home (810 Maxwell Ave, Greenwood, SC 29646), or Friendship Baptist Church (5801 Friendship Rd, Barnwell, SC 29812). Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 2:00PM in the Barnwell First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery with Honor's by the DNR Color Guard. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Friday evening at the Barnwell First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Farrell Ray, Rev. Billy Mew, Rev. Tom Terry, Rev. Jonathan Rochelle, and Rev. Jeffery Ray.
