Obituary for Larry Brown
Forrest Larry Brown passed away at his home in Barnwell, S.C., on Memorial Day, 2017, a few weeks after his 93rd birthday.
He was born to Forest Stuart and Emma Bessinger Brown on May 7, 1924, in his beloved hometown of Barnwell. Larry was a graduate of Carlisle Military Academy in nearby Bamberg.
A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe.
After the war, he came back to the United States and attended Gupton-Jones School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received his degree in mortuary science.
He briefly returned to Europe, working in Paris for the U.S. military as a civilian.
He then came back to the United States, working at Peeples Funeral Home in Barnwell and then Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia.
Larry then returned to Barnwell and spent the rest of his career at the Savannah River Site. He retired after 31 years of service there.
He enjoyed a long retirement, spending time with his many lifelong friends, including Albert Perry Black and Tim Moore, and traveling with his family and friends.
His faith and sports played big roles in his life.
He was a lifelong member of Barnwell First Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. Shortly before his death, he was recognized by the Masonic Lodge for 70 years of membership.
Everyone who met Larry knew about his love of sports, especially football. He was a volunteer coach. He and one of this closest friends, Roscoe Still, organized the Barnwell Warhorse Club.
He also was an avid gardener and bridge player, and he enjoyed fishing.
He’s survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Ann Smith Brown, a former high school history teacher. They have two children: Forrest Brown, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Emmylou Brown of Barnwell, South Carolina.
He’s also survived by five nieces and nephews: Derrick Adair, Monty Knight, and Alan Knight, the children of his late sister Mary Knight. Also, Paul Bolen and Larry Bolen, children of his late sister Ann Bolen.
His family will hold a visitation at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, at Mole Funeral Home in Barnwell, followed by a service in the chapel at 2 p.m. The Rev. Billy Vaughn and the Rev. Keith Richardson will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Barnwell United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the health care providers and others who helped with Larry’s care and well being. They include Jess Wilbanks, Vicky Glover, Eric Neumann, Shirlene Dorch, Shay Dorch, Carol Jones, Harvey Garrett and members of the Halcyon Hospice Group from Aiken, South Carolina.
