Marjorie Elizabeth Hill Foy passed away on Tuesday, July 9, in Greenwood, SC. She was the
daughter of Johnson M. Hill and Mae Still Hill and the wife of 51 years of Harry Lee Foy, Sr.
Margie and Harry Lee have four children: Linda Lee F. Early (Jack) of Bamberg and Mt. Pleasant, Harry
Lee Foy, Jr. (Mary Ann) of Central, Suzanne F. Nicholson of Greenwood, and Marjorie Jane F. Abbott
(Tom) of Spartanburg.
Margie especially loved her six grandchildren: William P. Early (Dasher), Ross H. Early
(Natasha), Henry L. Foy (Kari), William H. Nicholson III (Shelly), Elizabeth F. Nicholson (Rory), and
Thomas F. Abbott (Jessica). She also has 11 great grandchildren.
Besides her husband and parents, Margie was predeceased by her brothers, T.J. Hill and
Johnson M. Hill, Jr. In her last years, she was especially appreciative of her friends Isaiah Daniels,
Delores Pressy, Ann Brown, and the late Ruby Smith.
Margie was born in Barnwell County on July 22, 1926 and grew up in Snelling. She graduated
from Barnwell High School. During WWII she worked as a telephone operator in Augusta.
Once the war was over, she and Harry Lee were married, February 14, 1946. They made their home in
Barnwell County, where Margie was a stalwart citizen, working and raising her family. She assisted
Harry Lee in his businesses, Foy Farm Service and Barnwell Bowling Lanes. She was an
enthusiastic sports fan, as a basketball player herself, a champion bowler, and following the sports
activities of her children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren.
Margie led an active Christian life at Seven Pines Baptist Church, where she was baptized, and
later at The First Baptist Church of Barnwell, where she was a member of the Connor Sunday School
Class for many years. Margie led the Joyful Ministries group, which focused on shut-ins. She regularly
visited and sought to enliven those in nursing homes.
She also enjoyed membership in the Iris Garden Club. She and Harry Lee often
traveled to the annual reunions of the 88th Naval Construction Battalion (Sea Bees).
Margie was renowned for her lemon pies, which she shared with countless friends in Barnwell and
for her macaroni and cheese, which her grandchildren aspire to replicate. She welcomed all into her
home and was generous to a fault.
A service to honor Margie will be held Saturday, July 13, at 12 pm at the First Baptist Church of
Barnwell, with visitation preceding at 11 am. A private committal service will be held on Sunday
