Marshall Wayne Smyly, 64, of Barnwell, South Carolina passed away peacefully at his home Friday, September 16 following an extended illness. Born in Walterboro, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Richard H. and Jeanette G. Smyly. Wayne was a 1976 graduate of Barnwell High School and attended USC-Salkehatchie and Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. He began his career at Savannah River Site in 1980 working in many areas and capacities until his retirement in 2012. He was an avid hunter spending countless hours in a deer stand in search of that one “monster” buck. He thoroughly enjoyed sports, especially football, never missing an opportunity to watch his beloved Gamecocks or his alma mater Warhorses. Wayne loved his community and served it well over the years as a Lieutenant of the Barnwell Fire Department, member of the Barnwell Rescue Squad and reserve Deputy for the Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office. His greatest joy in life came from time spent with family being a devoted and loving husband, father, and “Mayne”. He will be sadly missed by all. Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Smyly; son Chandler (Kinsley Kinard) Smyly; sister, Peggy Abbott; stepson, Blake (Lindsay) Austin; step- grandsons, Cameron Austin, Cayson Austin, Banks Derrick and Austin Derrick; brothers-in-law Todd (SuVonne) Sumner and Richard Jacobs. Also, 6 nieces, 3 nephews and a host of cousins.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by a brother, David Smyly, stepdaughter Ashley Witherspoon, sister in-law, Julie Jacobs and his beloved fur baby, Hobo.
Visitation will be held from 6-8PM Monday, September 19 at Mole Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside service will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, September 20 at Barnwell Memorial Cemetery with Dr. Bart Kelley officiating. Pallbearers will be members of the Barnwell Fire Department.
