Obituary for Mary Ellen Bush
Mary Ellen Bush, the daughter of James Julien and Gladys (Brown) Bush, was born on August 24, 1920 in Barnwell, SC. She lived in Barnwell until her family moved to Arlington, VA when she was 15. She graduated from Washington and Lee High School and Washington School for Secretaries.
In 1940 she married James Edward McCormack. She joined Immanuel-Church-on the Hill (ICOH) in 1947. She was a Girl Scout leader for 11 years. She joined the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1949. During her many years as a DAR she served as Regent of the Ruth Brewster Chapter of the DC DAR. She was chairman of the Grounds for the NSDAR headquarters building and was a founder of the docent program at the DAR museum. She was a very active supporter of the DAR schools. She organized many tours of historical places in Maryland and Virginia for members of her chapter. She was a member of the Alexandria commitee of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She served as Chairman of her committee. She was active in the Women’s Committee of the National Symphony Orchestra. She established and ran the tea rooms at their Decorator Show Houses which featured soups that she developed. She and her husband were active in the Camellia Society of the Potomac Valley. She loved to promote Camellias, bring boxes of Camellias to church to give away after the service. She also provided Camellias to many other functions. She contributed Camellia plants to the Memorial Garden at ICOH. She was active in The Alexandria Association for many years serving as their refreshment chairman for their monthly meetings and spring events.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Bush Bryan of Hampton, SC and granddaughters Ellen Dunbar Bryan Brasse (Michael) of Horgan. Switzerland and Julia Roper Bryan (WIlliam Barnard) of Prague, The Czech Republic and three great grandchildren Caroline and James Barnard and Julian Brasse.
Her memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, March 11 at 3 pm at the Immanuel Chapel on the grounds of the Virginia Theological Seminary at 3737 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA. Her graveyard service wiill take place at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Barnwell, SC on March 22 at 11 am, Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell, SC will be in charge of the arrangements. (molefh.com)
