Obituary for Merrill J. "Jerry" Martin Jr
Merrill J. “Jerry” Martin, Jr. passed away Sunday, December 13, 2020 in Lexington, SC
Jerry was born on March 8, 1945 in Spartanburg, SC. He was the son of the late Merrill J. Martin, Sr. and Evelyn Greene Martin. Jerry served in the United States Airforce as a crew chief on a C130 Cargo Plane during Vietnam and retired from Clariant Corporation as a chief lab technician. Jerry’s selflessness was one of his most respectable personal qualities. He served as a volunteer EMT with the Barnwell County Rescue Squad for 25 years, assisting in saving multiple lives over the course of his service to the Barnwell community. In addition to serving his community in his free time, Jerry was a collector of many things, from antique figurines to rare coins. He also had a passion for vintage American cars and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, sharing his love of the latter with his wife and daughter on leisurely cruises near the South Carolina coast. Jerry was an excellent musician and artist; sharing both with his son, Marty, which carried on that legacy. He also enjoyed attending auctions regularly with his brother Randy. Jerry was deeply committed to his family, especially his children and grandchildren. Each year, when the baseball and football seasons rolled around, he made a point of attending every ball game that he could. Jerry was a fatherly figure and patriarch for his family, and his legacy will be remembered dearly by those who knew him.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 11:00AM in the Barnwell County Memory Gardens with Dr. Bart Kelley officiating. Please remember to maintain and observe social distancing. The family will greet friends after the service at the cemetery. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell is in charge of the arrangements
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Alice Lowe Martin of Barnwell, a son, Merrill “Marty” J. (Brooke) Martin, III. Of Murfreesboro, TN, a daughter, Tam Martin of Barnwell, grandchildren, Jhett Brinkley Martin, Sterling Jerome Martin, and Landon Brinkley Martin, a brother Randall “Randy” C. Martin of Barnwell, and a niece, Missy (Chip) Nolind of Barnwell, and Nephews, Will and Charlie Nolind of Barnwell.
