Obituary for Pat Chappell
H. Pat Chappell passed away on Saturday March 11, 2017 in the Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Born in Candor N.C. on May 21, 1928, he was a son of the late Lacy Calvin and Esther McCaskill Chappell. He attended Duke University, served in the US Marine Corps, after serving in the Marines he began farming with his father and two brothers in N.C. He then moved to Kline SC in 1952 and set out a peach orchard, which has grown to be one of the largest peach operations in SC. He was awarded the Mr. Peach Award and also Conservation Farmer of the Year. He was also in the pork business for fourteen years, serving as chairman of SC Pork Board for three years, also past member and vice chairman of the Edisto PCA, member of the Ellenton Agriculture Club, the Vocational School Board, Farmers Mutual Exchange and Selective Service board.
He was a pilot, flying a plane and a helicopter, His love of flying never ceased. He was a member of the Barnwell United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 2 pm in the Barnwell United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery on Haloed Ave. by the Holy Apostles Church. The family will receive friends from 1 pm until 1:55 pm in the Barnwell United Methodist Church sanctuary. Memorials may be made to the Barnwell United Methodist Church building fund of Barnwell United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Phyllis Coggin Chappell, daughter, Phyllis Lynn Chappell, two sons, Lacy Patterson Chappell (Sonia) Chappell and Thomas Lee Chappell; brother Mack Chappell; four grandchildren, Patrick and Joseph Chappell, Esther and Rush Chappell and one great grandchild, Yazmine Chappell. He was predeceased by a brother Jimmy Chappell.
