Obituary for Peter George Zionkowski
Peter George Zionkowski of Barnwell, SC, passed away April 28, 2015 in Augusta, Georgia. Pete was born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, on March 25, 1942, the son of Peter Frank and Albina Gilbus Zionkowski. Pete was a United States Air Force Veteran and served in the 649th Radar Squadron where he received the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. Pete worked for Honeywell and NASA during the Apollo Missions. He moved to Barnwell with Allied General Nuclear Services in 1972. He retired from Bechtel Savannah River Incorporated in 2009. His jobs included Instrument Engineering/Area Field Manager, Sr. Construction Services Manager, Project Manager with Environmental Remediation and Technology/Manager for Integrated Closure Support. Golf was his passion and he served as the Barnwell High School Golf Coach for the past six years and received Region AA Golf Coach of the Year for the 2013-2014 school year. Pete served on the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Board of Directors for 14 years as well as a past board member for Sweetwater Country Club. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Apostles. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda Bodiford Zionkowski; his son Tony (Susie) Zionkowski; daughter Michele (Jay) McDermott; his brother Greg Zionkowski, his grandchildren Lily and Lucie Zionkowski, Devin, Liam, and Regan McDermott, mother-in-law Elizabeth Bodiford, sister-in law Ann Towne, nephew Rick Holcombe, a special great-nephew Cody Holcombe, and his canine daughter, Banana. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2015, at 4:00 p.m., in the Barnwell Presbyterian Church with Reverend David Turner officiating. Burial will follow at the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery (Airport). Visitation will be Thursday, April 30, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Mole Funeral Home.
