Obituary for Phyllis Coggin Chappell
Phyllis Coggin Chappell, made her transition surrounded by her children at the home of her daughter on January 31, 2022,
She was born in Wadesboro, NC on April 9, 1930 to George and Tom Mae Coggin. After growing up in Star, NC, she attended William Peace University in Raleigh. Upon graduating she returned to Star to work as a bookkeeper in her father’s lumber mill. She married Hoye Patterson (Pat) Chappell on New Years Eve in 1950. She settled in Kline SC, grew peaches, and raised three children. She worked beside her husband in the packinghouse until she was 83. Her health dictated that she step down from full time, but she was still a huge presence there. Her delights in her life were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spread peace and light each day and was a blessing to all. She loved her church, The Barnwell United Methodist. Her brother George and sister in Law Carol held a special place in her heart. She was an avid traveler, having visited most everywhere in Europe, also Central and South America, and the Caribbean, but always declared, “There was no place like home.” She loved her home of Barnwell SC and the many friends she had there. She was a wise woman and gave sage advice on everything, such as broken hearts and dying pets, to “Don’t you think you’d feel better with a little lipstick?” She was the quintessential classy southern lady.
She was predeceased by her husband Pat. She leaves behind a daughter Lynne, two sons, Bud (Sonia) and Tommy, a brother George (Carol) Coggin, grandchildren Patrick (Mallory), Joseph, Esther, and Rush. Great grandchildren Yazmine, Ensley, and Waylon and beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Carol Jones, Shirlene Dorch, and Brenda Williams for being phenomenal caregivers. They extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Edisto Hospice as well.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday February 3 at the Barnwell United Methodist cemetery at 2:00PM. Instead of flowers, please send a donation to the Barnwell United Methodist Church cemetery fund. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell is assisting the family.
