Obituary for Rachael Louise Varnadore Knopf

Rachael Knopf, 82, of Barnwell, SC, passed away on September 3, 2023. She was born on April 15, 1941, in Chester, SC, to the late Adam R. Varnadore and Fannie C. Varnadore. Rachael was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and nanny. She was known by many endearing names, including Rae Rae, and was a best friend, confidante, and wealth of knowledge to her loved ones.


Rachael had a vibrant personality and was cherished for her compassionate nature and sense of humor. She had a passion for teaching and was a teacher in many ways, imparting wisdom and guidance to those around her. She enjoyed reading, sewing, crosswords, word searches, cooking, gardening, and caring for animals. Rachael also dedicated her time to babysitting and taking care of others.


In her career, Rachael worked at the Olar Sewing Room, Savannah River Site, and South Carolina Regional Housing Authority #3. She was a dedicated and hardworking individual who made a positive impact in her professional endeavors.


Rachael had a strong faith and worshipped at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Great Falls, SC, George’s Creek Baptist Church in Govan, SC, and Siloam Methodist Church in Barnwell, SC.


She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Rachael is survived by her brother, Jay Frank Varnadore, and sister Rosie Varnadore Stagner. She is also survived by her children: Machael K. Feagin/ Alan Feagin (deceased), Rachael K. Gardner, Mac A. Knopf II/ Helen B. Knopf, Tammy K. Briggs/Greg N. Briggs, and Richard A. Knopf/Jennifer R. Knopf. Rachael’s memory will forever be treasured by her grandchildren: Victoria T. Gunnells/Anthony Gunnells, Gregory N. Briggs II/ Heather S. Briggs, Mac A. Knopf III, (Trey)/Whitney Knopf, Felicia K. Knopf, Rylan A. Knopf, Madison R. Knopf, Heather N. Brabham (deceased), and Bridgette R. Perdue/Matthew Perdue. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Carolina P. Gunnells, Keagan A. Gunnells, Judson C. Briggs, Ella G. Knopf, Joshua R. Rhodes, Preston H. Rhodes, Elijah Brabham, and Lily A. Perdue, Weston P. Perdue.


Rachael was preceded in death by her husband, Mac A. Knopf Sr., and her brother, William Varnadore/Betty Varnadore.


A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 9th, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Siloam United Methodist Church, with graveside to follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Dementia Society of America, American Cancer Society, or Mission 22.


Rachael Knopf will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her love will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
