Obituary for Randall Charles Martin

Randall Charles Martin, son of Merrill Jerome Martin, Sr. and Evelyn Greene Martin, went to be with his heavenly Father on Sunday, March 26, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Merrill Jerome (Jerry) Martin, Jr. Randy was born in Spartanburg, SC on March 4, 1949. He moved to Barnwell at the age of 5 and graduated from Barnwell High School in 1967. He was a member of the Scarlet Knights who won the National Championship in 1967 and toured Europe for 31 days. He held many degrees in Music, History, Sociology, and Psychology. He went on to teach band at several different schools. Most notably he was a Carolina Cavalier at Blackville Hilda. He loved his job and every one of his students. His bands received over 500 awards, including national, state, and local. He was an avid Gamecock fan for his nephew and a closet Clemson fan, thanks to his grandboys. He loved racing, often visiting Rockingham and Darlington speedways. Randy was a member of the 20th SCVI and loved re-enacting history and was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He enjoyed taking his boys to Atlanta to see the Braves play. He also loved taking his grandboys turkey, deer, and duck hunting. He also loved to fish in his Jon boat he had always wanted. Papa rarely missed a ballgame or special event involving his family.

He was a loving son, brother, father, uncle, papa, cousin, friend and teacher. Throughout the years, he touched many lives due to his big heart. He never met a stranger. He never denied anyone help. He was a selfless man who will be missed by so many. Although his jokes were funny, one word summed up this God-fearing man … FAMILY!

The family will receive friends and family at Mole Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 to 8. All are welcomed with open arms. Reverend Bart Kelly will preach his home going ceremony on Wednesday at Mole Funeral Home at 11:00 am.

He is survived by his daughter, Melissa – “Snoopy” (Chip), his two grandson, Will – “spider monkey” and Charlie – “doodle bug” (Roxy), his nephew Marty (Brooke) Martin, and his great-nephew, Landon. He was loved and cherished by Marilyn Schmidt for the past few years, who he loved very much. For the past 20 years, he had a “special son” named Jason Macdonald.

Pallbearers are Joe Waller, Anthony Perry, Jerry Morris, Ray Witt, CJ Roberts, & Matt Hooper. He named his Carolina Cavaliers Marching Band members and the SC Band Director’s Association as honorary pall bearers, along with his boys’ friends. Larry Kinard, Chris Delk, Andy Sandifer, Anderson Corder, Rhea Ridgeway, Rebecca Myers, BJ Patterson, Jamari Dunbar, Evan Williams, Colton Rhodes , & River Shirey are also honorary pall bearers.
