Obituary for Revd Rubert Russell Reed, Sr
Revd Rubert Russell Reed, Sr., passed away on April 3,2015, Good Friday. He was a native son of Barnwell, SC, born on February 17, 1928 to Harold Cook Reed and Hattie Marie Perry Reed. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the United States Air Force, being honorably discharged in 1954. After working briefly at the Savannah River Plant, he accepted the call to the ministry, being ordained at his home church of Barnwell First Baptist. He attended the Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, Fl. and then William Carey College, in Hattiesburg, Miss. where he earned a BA degree. He then received post-graduate education at Southeastern Seminary. He served numerous churches in the Southern Baptist Convention, both in Mississippi and South Carolina. He met his wife, Myrtha Ellen Horton, while both were serving in the Air Force. They were married in West Palm Beach, Florida. This union produced three children: Rubert Russell Reed, Jr. (Teresa), Jill Reed Harris (Jim) and Tami Reed Woodrum (Dennis). Rubert is survived by his three children, and also grandchildren: Collin Reed (Shannon), Whitney Reed, John Martin Reed, Lyndsey Stone, Layne Stone, step- grandchildren Rachel Harris, Jim Harris, Jr., and Daniel Woodrum. He also is survived by great-grandchildren: Jackson Reed, Olivia Reed, and Abbott Reed. Rubert is also survived by one brother; John Perry Reed, as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. He was pre-deceased by his parents, sisters Doris Rushton, Vernelle Hair and Margie Deer, and brother Harold Reed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James Anglican Church-Blackville, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, or to the charity of one's choice. The Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 11:00, April 7th at the First Baptist Church of Barnwell Chapel and interment in the Barnwell City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday April 6th from 6-8 pm at Mole Funeral Home and 1 hr prior to the service on Tuesday at the Chapel.
