Obituary for Thomas Barrett Hagood
Thomas Barrett Hagood, 99, of Barnwell, SC, entered into eternal rest on February 1, 2017 at the Agape Hospice House in Columbia, SC. Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Anne Washington Hagood, and their five children: Barrett (Cindy) Hagood of Calhoun, GA; Brew (Libby) Hagood of Sullivan’s Island, SC; Elizabeth (Billy) Craver of Sullivan’s Island, SC; Betts (Marc) Funderburk of North Augusta, SC; and Robert (Laura) Hagood of Wilmington, DE. Tommy was adored by his thirteen grandchildren: Allen (Kristi) Hagood; Tommy (Tammy) Hagood; Johnson Hagood; Bates Hagood; Miriam Hagood; Katherine Hagood; Jennie (Judd) Haithcock; Anne Funderburk; Kate Funderburk; Will Craver; Sam Craver; John Craver; and Jack Hagood; and his four great grandchildren: Taela Rice; Benjamin Hagood; Avery Haithcock and Callie Haithcock.
Tommy, the youngest child of Miles Brewton Hagood and Jennie Lou Bates Hagood, was born on July 27, 1917 in Barnwell, SC. Tommy was predeceased by his brothers, Miles Hagood and Bates Hagood, and his sister, Elizabeth Burrus. Tommy attended Barnwell Public Schools and graduated from the University of South Carolina.
Tommy served his country for 5 years by enlisting in the US Army in 1940. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Tommy was trained to be a pilot for the US Air Corps and became a flight instructor. During his last year of service, Tommy was assigned to fly the P-38 fighter aircraft on reconnaissance missions from the island of Attu in the Aleutian Islands.
Tommy returned to Barnwell following the War and formed a general partnership with his best friend, Ed Richardson. Tommy and Ed ran one of the largest farming operations in Barnwell County raising a variety of crops and livestock. They also built a motel and drive-in movie theater when the Savannah River Plant was being constructed in the 1950’s. Tommy was a member of the Ellenton Agricultural Club where he enjoyed attending the monthly meetings and barbeque dinners. Tommy and Anne enjoyed getting together with their friends in Barnwell for family picnics, the State Park Supper Club, bridge clubs and the Winton Assembly. Tommy was a life-long member of the Barnwell United Methodist Church where he and Anne raised their children.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service to celebrate the life of Tommy Hagood at the Barnwell United Methodist Church, 236 Main Street, on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at 3pm. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the Sanctuary. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Cemetery adjacent to the Church of the Holy Apostles located at 9357 Patterson Street in Barnwell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barnwell United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 126, Barnwell, SC 29812.
