Obituary for Wendell Powell

Wendell Mack Powell, 87, passed away on March 16th, 2023. He was born in Rosman, NC on March 21st, 1935 to the late Manley and Elsie Whitmire Powell. He was the husband of the late Hazel Dodson Powell, his high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years.


He moved to Barnwell in 1954, and was in the grocery business for most of his life, working at Thomas and Howard Co. for 35 years. He then managed the Red & White Store in Allendale for a number of years. In his later years, he worked part-time at Food Lion in Barnwell for his longtime friend Reid Boylston. Many customers and employees remember his smiling face, joking manner, and kindness. He was always willing to help someone. Wendell was a simple, gentle, and kind man who never complained even when he had reason to. He believed in honesty, being good to people, and never looking down on anyone, especially the less fortunate. He will be greatly missed.


He is survived by his children, Debbie Powell (Riley) Shelton of Hartwell, GA, Rodney (Mel) Powell of Kline, SC, and Dianne Powell (Chuck) Bell of Williston/Barnwell, SC, and special son George Morris of Barnwell, SC; brothers Wayne Powell of New Ellenton, SC, and Austin Powell of Central, SC; 8 grandchildren Matthew (Jennifer) Bell of Williston, SC, Casey Bell (Brian) Herring of Edisto Beach, SC, Joshua (Katie) Powell of Irmo, SC, Aaron Powell of Clemson, SC, Heath (Elizabeth) Shelton of Savannah, GA, Heather Shelton of Savanah, GA, and Holly Shelton (Brian) Clements of Savannah, GA, and Puii Bijang of Northeast India; 7 great-grandchildren Kylie, Matti, Isla, Julian, Handley, Hollin, and Max; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


He is preceded in death by his sisters, Azalee Dodson, Ruby Dodson, and Avanelle Powell Butler; as well as his brother, Jack Powell.


Visitation will be held Sunday, March 19th at 3:00 PM at Mole Funeral Home, with funeral services beginning at 4:00 PM in the Mole Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Riley T. Shelton, Jr. Graveside will follow at Kline Cemetery.
