Obituary for William "Bill" Leon Walters
William "Bill" Walters died on February 24, 2014 at the age of 71. He was a father, grandfather, coach, teacher, assistant principal, and mentor. Bill grew up on a tobacco farm near Raleigh, North Carolina until his family moved to Charlotte in the 1950's. He loved baseball and basketball as a child, playing on a Babe Ruth Little League national championship baseball team as a youngster, and earning a basketball scholarship to Erskine University while at Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte. He excelled (athletically) at Erskine, eventually being inducted into its Sports Hall of Fame. He completed his B.S. degree and spent several years teaching and coaching in SC while earning a Master's degree in Education from the University of South Carolina. His career finally landed him at Barnwell High School in Barnwell, SC, where he was a guidance counselor and assistant principal for 30 years. Bill was the son of the late Mae Wheeler Boyer Cooper and William Thomas Walters. He is survived by his sister: Kathryn Walters Gilmore, of Youngsville, NC; children: Faith Yampolsky, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Lee Anne Walters, of Charleston, SC; and Robert Wheeler Walters, of Erie, Colorado; grandchildren: Elijah Robert Walters, Alexander Corley Walters, and Nicholas Eland Walters, all of Erie, Colorado; and his beloved dog Josie. The themes of family, friendship, community, and sport continued into the latter years of his life. Bill loved to spend time with his family, often flying to Colorado to be near his grandchildren. He remained integral to his community later in life by volunteering with the Meals on Wheels program and contributing to other local causes. Continuing his sporting pursuits, Bill played numerous rounds of golf at Sweetwater Country Club and other local clubs, where he enjoyed banter, competition and many laughs with friends. He will be remembered by many as a man who had so much love for so many people - his family, students, friends; a man who took the time to listen, to resolve conflict, to learn, to appreciate; and a man who would go to any length for his loved ones. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 3pm, at the Barnwell United Methodist Church. Mole Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bill Walters Memorial Scholarship Fund at Barnwell High School in care of The Greater Savannah River Community Foundation, P.O. Box 605, Allendale, SC, 29810.
