Obituary for William Robert "Bob" Dixon Sr.
William Robert "Bob" Dixon Sr. age 84, passed away at his home on Friday, December 4, 2015 surrounded by his family following a short illness. Bob married Pearl Magdalene Hutchinson at age 20 and was married to Pearl for 63 years, one month and three weeks. She passed away on October 7, 2014. Bob graduated from St. John's High School in Darlington, SC in 1950 and went on to be awarded a BS degree in Law Enforcement and Corrections from the University of Nebraska Education System in 1968. He enlisted in the US Army in October of 1950 following the outbreak of the Korean War and spent the next 21 years in the military, having enlisted as a private. During his military career, he rose to the rank of major and retired as the same in September 1971. While in the military, he commanded a Battalion during the Vietnam War and was awarded two Bronze star medals for his service in the war. Bob's post military career included a position in the newly formed South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as one of its first instructors. He would take a short hiatus from training police officers to being one when he accepted the position as the Chief of Police with the City of Barnwell SC. He would later return to the Criminal Justice Academy as Deputy Director. He also served as the Municipal Court Judge in both the cities of Barnwell and Surfside Beach SC. When he returned to Barnwell following his short stay on the SC coast, he accepted the position of County Magistrate in Barnwell County. Bob and Pearl had five children, Deborah Dixon of Conway, SC; Cheryl (Jerry) Courville of Cumming GA.; Belinda (Mark) Inabinet of Lexington SC; William Robert "Bill"(Donna) Dixon Jr of Barnwell, SC; and Rick (Stephanie)Dixon of Hampton SC; they have eight grandchildren; Bobby (Mary ANN)Inabinet; , Jennifer (Wes) Harris, Heather Dixon, Stephanie (Alan) Kennedy, Sabrina (Alexsis) Serrano, Kimberly (James) Franks, Hannah Dixon and Regan Dixon; and three great grandchildren, Scarlett Harris, Desmond Harris and Annaleigh Kennedy. Surviving Bob is a sister, Dorothy (Wade) Norris of Darlington SC. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Lonnie and Beulah Dixon; sister Mildred Hawkins; three brothers, Eddie C. Dixon, Lonnie C. Dixon and Harold V. "Bo" Dixon. The funeral will be held at 11 Am Monday December 7, 2015 at the Barnwell First Baptist Church 161 Allen St. Burial will follow in the Barnwell Co. Memorial Cemetery at the airport. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Sunday, December 6, 2015 also at the First Baptist Church. Prior to the visitation and funeral the family will be gathering at Peeples' Farm Shed in Barnwell on Bon Accord St. across the from the main entrance to Sweetwater Country Club on Hwy 64, west of Barnwell. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to; The Elevator Fund, First Baptist Church of Barnwell, 161 Allen St. Barnwell SC 29812
