Yvonne “Evie” Gibson passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025 at the age of 95. Evie was born to Milford Albert and Amy Kinsley Gilliland on November 19, 1929. She grew up with her siblings, John, Hud and Laura, on a ranch outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She then moved across the country to attend Converse College where she graduated in 1951 with a degree in sociology. Converse became and remained one of her favorite places. Evie met many dear lifelong friends at Converse and it was there that she developed her love for South Carolina.
After graduation, Evie moved to Columbia with friends and worked at Fort Jackson with the Red Cross as a social worker. While in Columbia she met and married Dr. Henry Gibson to whom she was married for 60 years. Evie and Henry moved to Barnwell, South Carolina where they raised their four daughters, Eve, Amy, Roz and Katie.
Evie’s life in Barnwell was filled with her love of her children, friends and community. She was always present in her daughters’ lives and felt blessed to be the mother of the “Gibson Girls.” Evie was bright and enjoyed her daily crossword puzzles. She was always active in her church and in the Barnwell community. Evie, along with her friend Diana, loved leading tour groups to New York City during the Christmas season.
During the last twenty years, Evie lived in Columbia, first at the Millpond community and then at Still Hopes Retirement Community.
Evie’s eleven grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Some of her most favorite memories were the times she spent with them, especially at the annual “Cousins Party” at their home on Hilton Head Island.
Evie is survived by her four children, Eve (Rich) Daniel, Amy (Buck) Montague, Roz Morrison and Katie (Dan) Fritze, her eleven grandchildren, Kinsley Daniel, Chad (Jordan) Daniel, Emily (Jenner) Wood, Felicia (Ben) Lindsey, Rosalyn (Michael) Mosier, Will (Val) Morrison, Eliza (Irving) Morrison, Katherine (Morrow) Boggs, Andrew Fritze, Caroline (Chase) Matthews, and William Fritze, and by her eight great-grandchildren, Lydia, Howell, Wright, Archie, Vera, Ariel, John and Georgie. Evie was predeceased by her great-grandson, Jenner Wood V.
The family is thankful for all of her caregivers, especially Ruth Anne Bange, whom she always called “her jewel.”
A private family burial will be held at Church of the Holy Apostles in Barnwell, South Carolina. The family asks that any memorials be sent to Carolina Honduras Health Foundation, PO Box 205, Lancaster, SC 29720 (https://chhf.org), a mission started by Dr. Henry Gibson which continues to be so meaningful and important to the family.
