Obituary for James B. "Jim" Peeples, Jr.
James B. Peeples, Jr., 66, of Murrieta, CA, died Sunday, April 5, 2015, in Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, CA. James Bryson Peeples, Jr., known as "Jim/Jimbo", was born Oct. 22, 1948, in Barnwell, SC, the son of James Bryson and Anita Kathleen (Quattlebaum) Peeples. Jim grew up in Barnwell, where as a boy he was an active Boy Scout, eventually earning his Eagle Scout pin. He attended Barnwell Public Schools, where he played football, basketball, and softball. Jim graduated from Barnwell High School in 1966. He attended and graduated from Clemson University, Clemson, SC, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering on May 8, 1970. While attending Clemson, Jim was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was accorded the honor as Theta Zeta Initiate No. 1, on April 12, 1970, for the work that he did with the Sigma Nu national representative who was in charge of facilitating Kappa Delta Chi into Sigma Nu. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the US Army upon graduating from Clemson. He served in the US Army Reserves for 8 years in the Chemical Corps of Engineers until his discharge as a 1st Lt. in 1978. Jim married the love of his life, Omega Sue Gilliam, in Barnwell First Baptist Church on May 17, 1970. After their marriage, Jim and Sue made their home in New Orleans, LA, where Jim was employed with Texaco, Inc. He attended Loyola University, where he earned his M.B.A. degree, while working full time with Texaco. While in New Orleans, Jim began taking flying lessons, earning his private ticket in 1971. Jim continued to work for Texaco until 1974, when he and Sue moved to Allentown, PA. Jim was employed with Air Products and Chemicals from 1974 until 1990. He received several promotions during his time with Air Products; and he was General Manager of Government Business from 1987 until 1990. Jim always had a love of flying. He earned his Instrument, Multi, and Commercial licenses, completing the quad in 1979. He and Sue moved to Columbus, OH in 1990 where Jim was President of CVI, Inc. It was in Ohio that Jim found the second love of his life, flying aerobatics. He loved the camaraderie of the sport and the many friends he made while competing. He and Sue spent many weekends at Aerobatic Contests where Jim competed in the Intermediate level, and later in the Advanced level competitions. Jim also competed in Advanced Aerobatics at the National level. He was an IAC Regional and National Aerobatic Judge; and he received the honor of being invited to judge the 2003 National Competitions. Jim and Sue moved to Murrieta, CA in 1997, where Jim was employed with Cryogenic Industries as General Manager of Service Companies. Jim retired in 2003. He continued to enjoy flying his Extra 200, "Cloud Dancer", in the beautiful, sunny, blue, skies of Southern California. He competed in the Advanced Class in many Arizona and California contests. Jim lived life to the fullest with everything he did. He loved flying his aerobatic plane, and the exhilaration and freedom of soaring like an eagle over the California desert at Borrego Springs. Jim loved the outdoors and he loved gardening with Sue. He was an engineer through and through; with an insatiable curiosity to know how things worked and why. Jim is survived by his wife, Sue Peeples; his sister, Kathleen P. (Roger W.) Landblom, Fargo, ND; his brother, Thomas C. (Pam) Peeples, Barnwell, SC; nephews, Canaan T. Peeples, and Rolland Still, both of Barnwell, SC; two step nieces, Robin (Steve) Wisniewski, and their sons, Philip and Noah, Rochester, MN; and Shannon (Tom) Leach, Minneapolis, MN. He is also survived by two aunts, Katherine Brabham, West Columbia SC; and Claudette (Verne) Critz, Little River, SC and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Anita Q. Peeples; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rolland and Omega Gilliam; and his sister-in-law Jonnie Claire and her husband, Bobby Still. Memorial donations may be made to The Michael J.
