Claudia was born August 13, 1941, in Columbia, SC, the daughter of two professional educators, the late Edgar and Claudia Kennemur Waites. She attended Dreher High School and was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of South Carolina in 1962 with a double major in Business and Education. She served on the USC Board of Visitors for 17 years and was a life-time member of USC Alumni. She was also President of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She taught school for several years at Crayton Middle School in Columbia and then at Barnwell High School in 1964-65. She retired from teaching and remained active serving on community, state, and educational boards and committees. Claudia has been a leader, an asset, and a role-model in every endeavor undertaken. First and foremost, she was a devout Christian and a faithful, dependable and active member of Barnwell First Baptist Church. She served on numerous committees and taught Sunday School many years. She was a member of the Ladies Fellowship Sunday School Class, and the Mission Crusaders womens ministry group. She particularly enjoyed the fellowship and traveling with the First Baptist Young at Heart Group. Claudia was also very active in community organizations. She was a member of the Wildwood Garden Club, the Sandlapper League, the Winton Assembly, and served as the Volunteer Executive of United Way for many years. She served on the Barnwell County Library Board for at least 40 years, and was instrumental in securing funds and planning the new library building which is such an asset to the City and County. Recognizing her many capabilities and leadership, Governor Campbell appointed Claudia to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 1986, where she served for 13 years; and she has continued as Trustee Emeritus at MUSC since 1999. She also served on the MUSC Endowment Foundation Board. The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Robert Smith and Staff of SC Oncology of Columbia who cared for Claudia since 1987. For the past 19 days, the teams of Doctors, and particularly the Nurses and Staff of Ashley River Towers, 6th floor west, MUSC, have endeared themselves to our family for their professional and tender comfort, love and care 24/7. We shall be ever thankful and appreciative. In lieu of flowers, Claudia and the family suggests that memorials be made to the following: Barnwell First Baptist Church Elevator Fund, 161 Allen Street, Barnwell, SC 29812; Barnwell County Library, 40 Burr Street, Barnwell, SC 29812; USC Educational Foundation, Gift Processing - Claudia Waites Peeples Scholarship, 1027 Barnwell Street, Suite 214, Columbia, SC 29208; the MUSC Foundation, 18 Bee Street, MSC 450, Charleston, SC 29425; or the charity of your choice.
