Obituary for Virginia Black Norwwod
Virginia Black Norwood, 98, passed away on Friday, October 10,2020. A graveside service will be held at the Barnwell United Methodist Church Cemetery in Barnwell, SC, on Thursday at 11:00.
Born in Barnwell, South Carolina, on September 25, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Martin Franklin Black and Annie Byrd Black, and widow of DeWitt M. Norwood, Jr., all of Barnwell.
After graduating from Barnwell High School in 1939 and Winthrop College in 1943 with a B.S. in Commerce (Business), she returned home and worked in the office of the late Senator Edgar A. Brown until she left to start her career with the State Department of Education in Columbia, S. C. She always felt privileged to have worked with James Haskell Hope, South Carolina Superintendent of Education, who had done so much for the advancement of education in the state. Virginia’s area in the Department was in the development of unified teacher education and certification programs. While in Columbia, she met DeWitt Marvin Norwood, Jr., who had moved to Barnwell from Laurens, SC.
Virginia and DeWitt married in Barnwell in 1947 and shared a wonderful life together for 55 years. Always a devoted wife and mother, Virginia enjoyed her many friends in Barnwell, was an active member of the Barnwell United Methodist Church and Cherokee Garden Club. She was an exceptional homemaker who spent much of her time cooking, sewing and knitting. As an avid reader, Virginia was always up to date on the latest news and was eager to hear the opinion of others on historical and current events. At the young age of 48, Virginia took up the game of golf where she made many new friends and was proud to have made two holes in one. Most of all, Virginia was a gentle woman who deeply loved her family, friends and church.
During her last years, Virginia enjoyed her life at Pruitt Health Barnwell with many new friends and activities. You could often find her coloring Bible verses, butterflies and birds, playing Bingo or attending the many Bible and spiritual services at Pruitt Health.
Surviving are her son, Dee (Julia) Norwood of Charleston, SC and Barnwell, her daughter, Louise (Reid) Boylston, of Barnwell, SC. She leaves behind her dearly loved grandchildren, Bailey (Beth) Norwood, Stillwater, OK, Corbett (Carrie) Norwood of Charleston, SC, Dabney Norwood, Wilmington, NC, and Mary Simms Oliphant of Charleston, SC, Jim Boylston, Cordes (Robin) Boylston, of Barnwell, Lindsay( Justin) Pearce, Columbia, SC, and nine precious great-grandchildren, Maggie and Abbie Norwood, Rita and Wade Norwood, Douglas and Madison Daniels, Bailey Shultz, Cora Boylston, and Lyl Pearce.
She was predeceased not only by her parents and husband, but an infant son, Jack Bailey Norwood, and two younger sisters, Betty B. Shealy and Martha B. Stabovitz.
Her family would also like to thank the special loving caregivers during her life, Edna Mae Hicks, Betty Hicks, Carol Jones and also to all the wonderful caring nurses and staff and her many special friends and their families at Pruitt Health Care Barnwell.
